An Evening With Sarah Palin, May 22, 2010: A Review, Part 2

This is the continuation of a series discussing the Sarah Palin event held in Denver on May 22, 2010. Read part 1 here.

Finally, it was time for the speakers to come on and dazzle us. This was what we were all waiting for. Dennis Prager was introduced first. I must confess, I knew precious little about Prager. Occasionally I hear him on the radio and enjoyed his philosophical approach but I am a bigger fan of Hugh Hewitt and was naturally more interested in Sarah Palin. But Prager nearly stole the show. Have you ever had that feeling when someone says things you have thought before but in a way that makes so much sense it really is like a light bulb going on in your head? That’s how I felt about Prager’s talk.

Prager started his speech by saying he would be as clear as he could be. Clear he certainly was. He said many interesting things but I will highlight just two that stood out. First, Prager believes that we are in a civil war over the culture. Evangelicals have felt that way for a number of years but Prager is right: the cultural war is escalating. As evidence he cited the fact that California and some cities in the Golden State have declared they will not do business with the state of Arizona because of their rather mild immigration law. “We are all Arizonans as of this moment,” Prager declared. The war is one of values and the values of the left are upside down.

Second, Prager explained his search to find the values that make America so unique. He found them closer than you would think. We carry them with us wherever we go. That’s because the three distinctive American values-what Prager called the “American trinity”-are on our coins and bills: E pluribus unum, In God We Trust, and Liberty.

Prager explained each value. Here are some highlights:

E Pluribus Unum

In spite of what liberals (including our dear leader) think, America is the least racist country in history. “We don’t care where you are from, we care where you are going.” Yet, the left divides by race, gender, class, etc.

Liberty

For liberals, equality supplants liberty. My take on this: Thus, we have regulations and laws that limit individual liberty in an effort to make everything “fair.” But fairness is not promised to anyone.

In God We Trust

America was founded to be a God-based country. God is the source of liberty. Prager cited Leviticus 25 in support. It’s been too long now for me to remember his exact reasoning for citing that passage. Lev. 25 is about the year of jubilee during which everything is returned to others that was borrowed or sold or taken because of debt. The people were given a new start. God must care very much about liberty to include such instructions. Christians founded this country. “How can you erase that history?” Excellent point, Dennis!

Prager concluded with a saying he asked us to remember: “The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen. Which do you think produces a better human being?”

With that, Prager took a seat at the table for the panel discussion later in the night and Senator Armstrong introduced Hugh Hewitt.

Check back tomorrow to find out what Hugh Hewitt said.

    Native Americans were not Christians.

    Relevance?

“Christians founded this country. ‘How can you erase that history?’ Excellent point, Dennis!”

    Native Americans were not Christians.

    Rev Nev Reply:

The Native Americans did not found a country called the United States of America.

    You get my meaning, though.

  4. KrimsonHULK on June 23, 2010 at 5:36 PM

You can’t erase that history either.

    Rev Nev Reply:

There is a singular difference that I think you are forgetting. No one disputes that the Native Americans were here first. Honest conservatives admit they were treated horribly. No one, certainly not me, is suggesting we erase that history.

On the other hand, a very tight case can be made that liberals are intentionally trying-have been for years-to eliminate the Christian heritage from which this country springs. That is what Mr. Prager was referencing. There are two entirely different points, here.

Well when you say that “Christians founded this country”, it kinda sounds like you’re saying that they weren’t here first.

And your case can only be made tight when you generalize ALL liberals. No one in my circle tries to eliminate the Christian heritage that the founders brought to this land… but we do acknowledge and respect the other cultures as the founders intended as well. I/ we don’t think that we are better.

    Rev Nev Reply:

In your case, KrimsonHULK, you are the exception. Still, if you choose to be liberal you should know that you are aligned with people who hate the cause of Christ. I am not saying all liberals are this way, but there is a large swath that will stop at nothing to eliminate Christian heritage, and Christ in today’s public sphere.

I don’t know, Nev. I mean, I’m sure that there are libs like you described out there, but I have a rather large circle of like minded friends, family and associates. And while admittedly within that circle there’s a small handful who dismiss the existence of Christ, NONE are actively pursuing the destruction of the Christian faith. I have met one person like that and immediately we didn’t get along. But I pray for people like that, not pass my own harsh judgments over them and write them off as lost causes. THAT is not the way of Christ.

I’m not as exceptional as you may think. I think you need to just dismiss the widely accepted myth among conservatives that liberals/progressives/democrats are mostly Godless heathens. Do that, and I will dismiss the myth that most conservative men are secretly homosexuals. GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!
    :)

    Rev Nev Reply:

I should have been more clear. Perhaps rank and file liberals like yourself are not actively seeking to suppress Christianity. The point I tried to make is that there are many liberal organizations who do work against Christians in the public sphere and public displays of Christianity.

And yes, these people should be prayed for, witnessed to, evangelized, etc. You seem to have ascribed a motive to me that I did not intend: judgment.
