What the Big Deal Is
The coverage of the Roman Polanski arrest is fascinating. In this case, it is not the news reports that make the issue. The initial reports I saw explained the events leading up to Polanski fleeing the country and his exile since doing so. The striking thing is what happened after the initial reports. People, especially in the Hollywood and Europe, began to defend this admitted pedophile. Seriously? This man admitted he drugged and raped a 13 year old girl. Big Hollywood has had some good coverage including this article from a Jesuit who puts the matter in perspective by turning the tables. If Polanski were a priest would the calls be the same for his release? The answer is obvious.
But it is a big deal no matter what Hollywood says or how long ago the offense took place. Polanski crossed one of the last boundaries of morality in the West: the sexualization of children. He should pay for the offense and for running from the law. Justice demands it.
Update: There is a petition to free Polanski. Check out those who signed it. Notice how they try to twist the issue as being one of morality. Morality? It’s a moral issue to set Polanski free? These sick people have it exactly backwards. Just one more example of how the left distorts morality to be whatever suits their cause du jour. His victim, Samantha Geimer, speaks out in hopes of making the issue go away. She seems to suggest there was a plea bargin in place. Nevertheless, the man needs to spend what’s left of his life in jail. He forfeited his freedom.
