The Battle is Won, the War is Not

It’s official! The health care debate of late summer 2009 has been won by conservatives. The polls show those in favor of proposed reforms are now decisively in the minority. Yet Congress continues work on a plan. Today is a big vote on federal funding of abortion. Once again the momentum seems to be on the conservative side.

Abortion supporters are upset of the very idea that a national plan might not cover the cherished procedure.

“Nancy Keenan, president of Naral Pro-Choice America, argued that if the bill blocked the use of subsidies for abortion coverage, private insurers would stop covering abortion because those plans would be excluded from the federally subsidized programs.

“Women who already have this coverage would lose it,” Ms. Keenan said.”

Now she knows how the rest of us feel. We the people are concerned the coverage we currently possess will give way to a behemoth government run plan that is no more efficient, no more coverage, and no less costly. And that does not begin to consider the staggering cost to liberty.

But I digress. The point is that suddenly when something liberals are passionate about is in play they scream like schoolgirls being taunted by a bully with a snake. The Feds taking over one-sixth of the economy is no problem when it promises them power but protect the conscience of a sizable portion of taxpayers and the whole bill is going to hell in a hand-basket.

What a disingenuous debate this is! Let’s be honest, this debate is not over health care in this country. The fact is the American health care system is the best in the world and billions of people worldwide benefit from it. Even some liberals have admitted as much.

The debate is really about advancing a liberal agenda. The left wants to see the Feds (read: you and I) pay for health insurance for the uninsurable. People like Ms. Keenan want to use your taxes to pay for and expand access to abortion. The good people of this country have too much sense to allow that to happen. They will endure the summer heat and name-calling from the highest levels just to get a chance to voice their opinion.

The battle of public opinion may be won but the war to prevent passage of the bill goes on. This is not the time to relent. The liberals in Congress are counting on the fact that people have returned to normal life after summer breaks and will now be too busy to pay them any attention. Hugh Hewitt posted a list of vulnerable congresspeople and how to contact them. Pick up the phone or send them an email to let them know why you are against this plan.
